DESCRIPTION of DEMENTIA PRACTICE GUIDELINE
Evidence-Based Competency Workshops

Working as a Recreational Therapist with individuals who have dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease can be challenging, especially when you encounter behavioral problems. This all day intensive workshop will provide you with extensive training in using ATRA’s Dementia Practice Guideline in your facility. After completion of 6-50 minute modules and passing the competency exams, you will receive a Certificate of Training and will be listed on ATRA’s Dementia Practice Directory. This evidence-based guideline and training will improve your skills, recreational therapy practice and the lives of your residents.

Competency Level: Basic, Intermediate, Advanced

This training is designed for and addresses clinical skills and competencies for recreational therapists. Other allied health professionals are encouraged to attend, however, a recreational therapist must be the primary individual registered to attend.

Learning Outcomes:
1. Participants will be able to define the term disturbing behaviors.
2. Participants will be able to identify five recreational therapy interventions to be used in addressing disturbing behaviors.
3. Participants will be able to explain a non-pharmacological approach to treating disturbing behaviors.

The training fee includes a copy of ATRA’s Dementia Practice Guideline.

Training Schedule:
DPG Trainings will include:
6 hours of instruction broken into 6 sections of 1 hour each.

Each session will include 50 minutes of information.
10 minutes for testing on the educational materials.

Other Information
For CTRS’, ATRA membership is required. If the individual is not an ATRA member, they must join to attend the certificate program and be included in the dementia practice directory. A one year ATRA membership is included in the non-member fee structure for the workshop.
Current students in RT programs may take the course, but will not be placed on the DPG Directory until they become certified as a TRS.
You must attend the entire day’s training to be eligible for the Certificate of Training.
Dementia Practice Guideline Certificates of Training will be good for three years, after which time an individual must attend a shortened hands-on training to update information and competencies.
